A dark tale

Hand's Off is a superb 8 volume series about three young men in High School who have special ESP abilities. The attractive and brightly coloured front covers belies what is actually a dark tale. Kotarou Oohira moves to Tokyo to live with his old friend and cousin Tatsuki and their grandfather. While the cheerful and optimistic Kotarou enjoys a new start at school, finds himself a girl-friend, makes friends with the charmer Yuuto Urushiyama, and joins the basket-ball club, he finds himself ignored and disliked by Tatsuki. Unknown to Kotarou he brought on a psychic ability in Tatsuki when they were young. He now has the ability to see pass events and terrible images of murders and suicides and he has turned into a distrustful and tormented young man. Yuuto, meanwhile, is a cheerful lady's man who has the ability to see auras and can tell what people are feeling. By touching Kotarou his gifts become stronger and finds himself trying to help Tatsuki and Kotarou become friends again. Kotarou has a tendency to want to help people and finds himself constantly in trouble and in dangerous situations. Volume 1 - Kotarou looks for a missing girl, Yuuto finds he has a dangerous secret admirer, and Kotarou starts a friendship with a college student. Volume 2 - Kotarou investigates a series of attacks in their school and goes on a date with a girl who has a violent ex-boyfriend and a jealous best friend. Volume 3 - Kotarou finds himself the object of hate from a rival basketball team and a mysterious new teacher starts in their school. Volume 4 - Kotarou finds himself caught up in a hospital robbery, Tatsuki gets himself arrested for a crime he did not commit, and we learn about Yuuto's troubled history. Volume 5 - a new student Kazuma starts school who also has the same ESP powers as Tatsuki. He blames Tatsuki for his powers and starts a series of revenge attacks. Volume 6 - continues with the events of volume 5 and has devasting and dramatic ending. Tatsuki delves deeper into despair and finds his ESP powers growing. Volume 7 - Kotarou and Yuuto try to find the missing Tatsuki who has over the edge. Tatsuki focuses all his rage and resentment into taking revenge on Kazuma. Urushi-yama returns to school and Kotarou is made aware of his own ESP powers. Kotarou finally finds out the reasons why Tatsuki appears to dislike him. And ... things take an interesting turn at the end with the little boy Akira and his dad. Volume 8 - the conclusion of this fantastic series. We all knew there was something strange about Akira and we should find out what it is in this final volume which will tie up the loose ends. Katsumoto is a great storyteller and has produced an addictive series. She is able to bring humor to a series that covers kidnapping, violence, and murder without lessening the impact of the topics. Tatsuki is a shojo lovers dream - goodlooking, dark, brooding, tormented, and surprising violent, but will risk his own life without a second thought to
