Snow Science

I have had the hardback edition and referred to it for years. This is about 95% complete and is definitely a "must have" for anyone involved in snow - avalanches, construction, transportation (roads, railroads, bridges), alpine and nordic ski areas. There is even a chapter on skis and skiing. This is a substantial tome. Do not look here for the biology and physics of snow. This is the practical, hands-on side. The science of snow is changing rapidly as we learn more in the face of global climate weirding. Atmospheric freezing levels are rising and snow metamorphism as we are used to it is changing. There are distinct differences in snow climates (maritime, continental and variations) that this book does not address. This is a very important "first step" that brings the breadth and depth of otherwise critical snow information together in one place. As human population increases and there is more pressure to understand and make use of watersheds and airsheds for recreation, safety, potable water, construction and transportation, this book should be close at hand.

handbook of snow, principles, processes, management & use

very comprehensive overview of most data available on snow science over the last century. The bibliographies alone are worth the price. While there may be more specific texts available on specific areas of interest,I have found none that covers as many aspects. Most books focus on avalanche safety for example with some cursory science to go with it. This book at 776 pages in length examines most aspects of snow science as well as the disciplines of most interest, ie; avalanches and control of them, transportation, recreation, military, and the related science for each area. The book covers the physics and chemistry of snow in each chapter as it applies to that area of interest in a manner that is user friendly to the layman.

Everything you wanted to know...

Everything you ever wanted to know about snow (and ice) but were afraid to ask...The title of the book says it all, and it's a shame this book is out of print. The technical information on snow and ice formation and morphology simply doesn't go out of date. Even the information on control and design of structures for snow loading is still valid. And, as a bonus, there's a large section on the history of recreation and snow, including ski technology and development. Many of my textbooks have been put away in the back corner of the bookshelves, but this one sits in the midst of my other working technical reference books.
