Half Moon Down is one of those horror novels from an era of horror literature long gone by. In the 80s, Zebra published a lot of horror novels from a variety of different authors when the horror genre was strong! One of their better authors is Stephen Gresham. Gresham's tale of a town utterly demolished by a tornado and the evil it unleashes is fast paced and easy to read. It's one of those novels that is well crafted and well thought out. The evil released by the tornado, while not entirely original is interesting. What Gresham does really well is craft believable characters thrown into an unbelievable situation. The reader easily relates to all the characters in this story and that's what hooks you. You can forget about the familiarity of the evil, the atypical setting if you have very unique characters you can feel for. Trapped in a school by the evil you will really begin to feel for these characters as their situation gets worse and worse.Overall, a decent novel by Gresham. Not his best work to date but a good read nonetheless. Great characterization and a decent story help a rather a typical evil resulting in a overall balanced novel.
