Book Overview

A major study of one of Africa's most fascinating leaders, this is the first volume of a projected three volume biography. The book covers Sellassie's early training as a member of the cultural and political elite and his first period as Emperor during which time he established himself as a major figure on the world stage and set about managing Ethiopia's political and economic entry into the modern world.

A scholarly work.

This work is impeccably footnoted, with an extremely detailed bibliography. It can be utilized fully for historical reference. It is also well-written, entertaining and insightful. And the subject matter tells a story as epic as I ever read. It is a story bigger than the man himself, because it takes in World War I, the taming of a continent, and the flow of history itself. I came here looking for the next volume...did Mr. Marcus ever write it?
