Book Overview

A haiku is a short Japanese poem, mostly of just three lines, often capturing the fleeting moment in a spirit of Zen like immediacy - the falling of plum blossom, the splash of a frog as it leaps into a pond. This book is a beautifully illustrated celebration of the places, people, customs, festivals and transient pleasures evoked by this much loved verse form. A beautiful book that not only has haiku from the masters, but includes much more into this great bo

As a lifetime student of the Samurai arts, including Japanese poetry, specifically haiku, this book is a true treasure. This volume not only has a brief history of haiku, but it also has numerous historical factors relating to how haiku fits into the Japanese Shinto religion and Zen. This book covers Japanese society and court life, the poet's world, Symbol and belief, nature, arts and culture. In conclusion, if you like haiku and Japanese cultural history, you will love this beautiful, fully illustrated book. Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Season of the Warrior: a poetic tribute to warriors, Wakizashi-jutsu manual, Tanto-jutsu manual, Martial Art Myths, Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques, Never Trust a Politician).

Inspiring - Relaxing!

This is a nice collection of poems but it is much more - this gives you the great history of Haiku and also of the great Haiku poets like Basho and Issa. I worked on this bit by bit, enjoying the poetry and also the great art that it showcases! It took me almost two years, but I finally finished it and then passed it on. Highly Recommended!

Nice mix of history and haiku

got this book for Christmas...love it's mix of history, haiku form and poetry itself from some of the haiku masters and others. Nice reading
