Anyone reading a great number of westerns will no doubt have come upon the name of Lauran Paine, a writer of note in the western field who has reputedly written hundreds of westerns. This book GUNS ALONG THE BORDER is only one of many he wrote under the pen name, John Durham. According to blurbs on other books, yes, he is related to that other Paine in history, Tom Paine. But for discussions of this book the name Paine has little to do with it and excellent storywriting does. If you enjoy a western of the border country between the U.S. and Mexico, and you enjoy riding with a couple of Arizona Rangers in an attempt to stop not only a rebellion but at the same time keeping gangs of bad men killing innocent, insular Mexican people, then you need to ride with Arizona Rangers Clay Houser and Jeff McLean for 194 pages. Houser and McLean ride the badlands attempting to prevent the meeting of two outlaw bands transporting contraband gold. With few rangers, and few helper, but with fireworks aplenty the action and suspense seldom have any let up in this western from 1966. If you like your westerns so that you can feel the heat of desert, sense a horse under you, and hear the shots of a pistol and rifle, then this is a very good book with which to spend a few hours. Lauran Paine has a talent for serving up well written, entertaining westerns. And this is certainly one of them. Sabe, pard? Semper Fi.
