I received this book as part of a conference that Pat Pavelka had. I was skeptical when going. I teach 4th grade and was hoping that there would be a little bit of information I could use to help me with my guided reading organization and instruction. Pat ended up saving my reading class! I was able to completely use everything she talked about (it is all in the book). I love that my students work in heterogeneous groups during centers, but then I can pull them back into homogeneous groups for their instructions. She even includes an aspect that allows the kids to work in small groups with books...I ended up calling them "Book Clubs." The kids love them!! There are different organizational patterns you can use and many centers to choose from. You can even choose how many centers to include. That being said, I chose to do the 8 center rotation...it was a bit overwhelming. The kids were working on too many projects over too long a period (two weeks). I've had to introduce some of my own centers so that they aren't always writing something. They wouldn't have enough time to finish and I was spending all my time grading it all and making sure they all turned in every center. I'm ordering the newest edition today in hopes that there are more options for centers that don't necessarily include a final product. I'd love a fluency center! All in all, this book is definitely worth the money!!!
