I picked up 'American Romance' after reading and loving 'Spartina'. 'Romance' is the sort of novel that isn't entirely enjoyable when you're reading it, but you find yourself unable to drop it until you've got to the end... and even then, the scenes and the characters stick with you. The bad first: in places, this book is over-written. I'm ok with highly detailed, introspective novels, but 'Romance' goes a little too far...
