Boys Will Be Boys

John Kenny Crane definitely has a knack for humor. He re-creates the stories of the character Robert Greenway growing up. Robert Greenway is an average boy who gets himself in a whole lot of mischief and dreams about tits and what's under those panties. Crane puts you in his shoes in the 12 short stories and one Novella. My favorites are "The Merry-go-round Man" in which Robert finally advances to be the operator of the roller coaster only to lose control, run away, return and in the end he helps save the riders who think their ride will never stop. In "Hardy Country", another favorite, Robert, in pursuit of research for his doctoral thesis in English, succumbs to the enticements of a member of the opposite sex, named Gwen, and has a spirit-of -the-moment trip to Paris. He feels guilty, but is she ever HOT. It's an education in more ways than one! This collection of short stories will most likely appeal more to male readers.

Brings Back Memories of the 1950s and 60s

Jack Crane's collection of stories brings back memories of growing up in the 1950s and 60s for those of us born after WW II. Told from the perspective of Crane's hero Robert Greenway, a number of the stories focus on male sexual awakening and fascination with the female body. Others relate "buddy" escapades, strict Catholic schooling, racial injustice and pride of father. Told in a clipped, direct style, many have energy and momentum that carry the reader forward; others are less compelling. My favorites are "The Merry-Go Round Man", "Missing You" and "The Day the Fifties Became the Sixties".
