Determinants of Credit Financing Choice amongst Small Dairy Farmers:: The Case of Eldoret municipality in Kenya

In Kenya the small scale dairy farming sector continues to battle with the daunting task of moving from a subsistence syndrome to the plan of entrepreneurship . The main objective of the study was to examine the determinants of the choice of credit financing among small scale dairy farmers in Eldoret municipality. To do this, a number research questions were raised addressing choice of credit amongst small scale dairy farmers, available sources of credit finance, and characteristics of farmers influence in the choice of credit. The findings of this study showed that the small scale dairy sector is a potentially high job creation sector besides being a stable avenue for income generation. The study also revealed that socio-economic factors had impact on the sourcing of credit finance among farmers. It was also evident that the impact of credit would be profound only if the financiers make the formal credit accessible and available. Also monetary and training is the most preferred form of receiving credit. The findings of this study will be significant in helping agricultural stakeholders identify major problems facing small scale dairy farmers and in informing policy in the area.
