inspirational

I'm still reading the book, but from what I know of Nancy Roth, a personal friend of mine, her books are always very inspirational.

A great resource for congregations

Grounded in Love was the foundation of a three-session pre-Advent adult forum that I led in the Episcopal church that I attend. It was enormously useful. Because the book is both simply written and full of good information and intelligent insight, it was accessible to everyone who read it, and easy to summarize for those who did not. It got high marks from even the most critical readers. Most important, because the book starts and ends with hope, and maintains a positive tone -- asking what we can do inspired by love, rather than telling us what we should do because things are so bad -- we were able to keep a positive tone in the discussions as well, and talk about what could be accomplished. The exchange of stories and ideas based on the "Ponder and Pray" sections of the book were both lively and profound. We concluded the forum with lots of ideas for ways we could act, both personally and as a congregation. I have been waiting for this book for a long time, not knowing who would write it, and was thrilled to be able to use it in a parish setting. Thanks again, Nancy -- the book works as well as I thought it would!

A timely passionate message of ecological concerns

Nancy Roth's Grounded in Love is the timely message of a passionate life-long student, wife, mother, grandmother, priest and educator. This eloquent book is touched with humor, gentleness and grace, but does not sugar-coat deep concerns for the future of humanity, Mother Earth and the fragile ecology we all share today. Nancy Roth's years of worldly experiences with people from all walks of life, her scope of knowledge, compassion and strong faith are blended into a crystal clear script. Nancy weaves warm stories of her family, selections of poetry, quotes and reflections of recognizable others, into a quilt of present-day concerns. Grounded in Love touches my soul. It encourages each one of us to leave a light footprint upon our planet. It leads us to read, ponder and pray - then put forth an individual plan of action to help keep this precious earth green - for ourselves, our children and future generations. This beautiful book will be in the hands of all my family, not as an instructional text, but as a gift of love.

Loving Concern

Nancy Roth has written a series of beautiful and gentle reflections on nature, God and the relationship that exists among all of us in this place we call the world. As I read the text, often I hear her voice tremble with the overwhelming love she has for this world and all that is in it. I am amazed at her calm witness to the reality of God on the earth--a reality I have felt and which I desire to express in my own way. I have not finished the entire book (will maybe write a longer review later), but I think it would be useful as a book of daily meditation, either for individuals or groups. Roth has written many short stories with prayers and reflections following each one. The stories are dynamic; she connects her relationships with children, friends and family to larger questions of personal action and intention. Grounded in Love is a unique, intelligent work that inspires me with deep questions and calls for loving action in a world on the cusp of total deterioration. Thank you, Nancy! Sarah Pruett

Grounded in Love is quite simply, superb!

It may sound strange, that although I write "religious" books myself, I do not often read this genre. Nancy Roth's Grounded in Love is the exception. I like its structural division--love, concern, ethics, action, hope--and the lovely epigraphs at the beginning of each chapter. There is something for everyone in this book. It is both a practical and an inspirational book and as I read through it, I could see many uses for it--there is excellent material for a weekend retreat; it could be used by any church or community group as a short course; it could be taken on a month-long Ignatian retreat; or it could be used, a chapter a day, for one's own individual enlightenment. It even has suggestions for raising ecological consciousness in young children through hikes in the woods and such. Nancy is way "ahead of the curve" in terms of what she personally does to encourage a cleaner, greener earth in terms of adaptations to her lifestyle and home, including the installation of a green cooling and heating system for her house. She lives what she proclaims in a delightful way, but does not put readers who are not quite there yet on a guilt trip. This book is tough--it has a serious message--but due to Nancy's gentle style, I did not feel judged. Rather I just wanted more. I read every word and I was sad when the book ended. For those like me, deeply concerned about the future of Mother Earth, but who do who not read "religious" books and do not enjoy being preached to, this book is for you! Grounded in Love is a rare and wonderful book! Anne Rowthorn, Ph. D., freelance writer of ecological books, including Caring for Creation and Earth and All the Stars.
