A play written in 1930 by Marc Connelly The Green Pastures presents episodes from the Old Testament through the imagination of a young African-American girl in the Depression-era South. The location of the biblical stories is New Orleans with an all-black cast. The play, adapted for television, was produced and shown on the Hallmark Hall of Fame in 1957 and 1959. It featured numerous African American spirituals arranged by Hall Johnson. The original play was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1930. A film adaptation made in 1936 caused great controversy, with white drama critics giving favorable reviews while blacks questioned Connelly's claim of giving an authentic view of black religious thought. Some countries, such as Australia, banned the film for being "blasphemous." This description may be from another edition of this product.
