ANOTHER BELOVED TALE FROM HELEN HOOVER!

After reading the magnificent Gift of the Deer, I am determined to read every book written by Helen Hoover who, with her husband, gave up her job as a chemical engineer in Chicago and moved to the northern Minnesota wilderness, on Gunflint Lake, in the 50s. I was drawn to this book because I enjoy reading children's stories. It was not a disappointment, as I am sure nothing written by Ms. Hoover ever could be. It is about a conglomeratin of delightful animals and a bird who are friends and share the same forest dwelling place. And one lone (and should I say lonely) enemy as well -- the Great Wolf. It is Christmas day and they are all expecting the Good Woodsman, who lives in a log cabin, to provide special treats for them on this special day. When he does not appear, they know they have a problem. And a very serious one at that. How they go about solving it to rescue the injured man, and the resultant bringing together of all involved (even including the enemy) makes for a charming and warm-hearted reading experience. Special mention must be made to the beautiful hand-colored woodcuts by Betsy Bowen that illustrate the book. I particularly like her use of colors which are quite imaginative. Ms. Bowen herself is a resident of the wilderness as well, where she has a fine art print shop near Lake Superior's north shore. This book is especially nice for children as it fosters caring and positive feelings for natural life and the outdoors.

a great christmas story

I discovered this book several years ago in the library. I bought my own copy and have also given it as a gift to many others. It is a great Christmas story that has been loved by everyone that I have shared it with. It is both gentle and strong. Quiet and awesome. The wood cut images support and enhance the internal images evoked when it is told or read. This is a 5 star book that will always shine and never become tiring.

My review

Excellent book. I love this author and this children's book didn't disappoint me. Recommended highly.

A Christmas story so eye-catching that it will prove to be treasured picturebook reading all year ro

Illustrated throughout with beautiful and striking woodcuts by Betsy Bowen, Great Wolf And The Good Woodsman is a picturebook about a majestic wolf, feared by all denizens of the forest, who watches a deer, a squirrel, and a chickadee as they wait expectantly for the Good Woodsman to bring them a feast of cedar, corn and seeds for Christmas. When the woodsman injures himself and there is no fire in the stove, the animals fear that he will freeze. Only the Great Wolf can create a plan to save the woodsman, and in return the woodsman invites the wolf to share in Christmas dinner. The text of Great Wolf And The Good Woodsman is slightly more involved than that of most picturebooks, yet entirely suitable for young people who have graduated from easy-reader text but aren't quite ready for chapter books yet. Great Wolf And The Good Woodsman is a Christmas story so eye-catching that it will prove to be treasured picturebook reading all year round.
