The Grammaphone 1997 Classical CD Music Guide is an essential item for any good music lover. The book is comprehensive and thorough. Many good cds have been found through its use. Many eyes and ears have been opened. However, some composers are short changed. Also, there are numerous recommendations without any ratings. The guide is not broken down by periods which some find helpful.The Penguin Guide is better. Bill Parker's "Building a Classical Music Library," 3d ed., 1994 by Jormax Publishing also is a good and useful book, albeit shorter and a bit dated. Grammaphone is a good second guide. better cross listing would have been valuable by period and .
