Small, but perfectly formed

Freemantle's debut - written each day as he travelled to and from 'work' - is a perfectly balanced story. A fine and believable central character pitted against a defector who doesn't ring true. It's short and sweet, unlike many espionage novels, but doesn't waste a word. Thrilling and satisfying.

This is the question that baffles Adrian Dodds, a quiet, unassuming young man, despised and abandoned by his wife, but brilliant at his job of processing every defector to Britain from the Communist bloc. The Americans and the British both are eager to put Pavel to work. Only Dobbs doubts his authenticity and abandons his timidity to voice his distrust of Pavel until his job and his life is in jeopardy.
