Meanwhile, Macey's father, a reformed, notorious cult leader seeking redemption, is the target of a deadly attack just as he plans sweeping reforms at the university, including banning animal research. Are powerful vested interests behind the attempt on his life-or is the danger closer to home?

Things take an even darker turn when Macey's ex-boyfriend, Detective Vince Knox, delivers devastating news: she's the prime suspect in both the attack on her father and Jolie's murder. Vince offers to help clear her name-but at a high cost. He'll protect her, but only if she allows him back into her life.

And just when Macey thinks she's reached her breaking point, her beloved but trouble-prone cat, Wikket, vanishes without a trace.
