There are many different kinds of rabbits to choose from if you want one as a pet. One of the main considerations is that you select one that looks "healthy and lively." Baby rabbits, or kits, are old enough to leave the nest at around five weeks of age. You can have a single rabbit, but they do become lonesome. The recommendation is to select two "neutered female rabbits." Of course keeping a rabbit is a major responsibility because they can live for a decade or more. After choosing your pet or pets, selecting a proper cage comes next. There are certain dos and don'ts you need to think about to create a happy habitat for them. It may take a bit of time for a rabbit to become used to you and your home. When the rabbit does become accustomed to its new surroundings, there are certain suggestions that might help you. For example when you go to pick up your rabbit you should "Put one hand under the rabbit's body, under its shoulders. Put your other hand under its bottom. Then lift it up close to you." Other things like keeping it away from cords is a must because they love to chew. In this book you will learn about their physical makeup, their exercise needs, how to set up and maintain a cage, their need for play, how to feed them, how they "talk," medical care, what to do when you go on vacation and more! If you are considering acquiring a pet rabbit, this is an excellent resource for the novice rabbit owner. When I first started reading the book I was expecting an "easy reader" of rabbit facts, but was pleasantly surprised that it was very thorough and went into a lot of detail about owning one. All the material speaks directly to children and discusses not only facts, but also their responsibilities toward the animal. For example, when choosing a rabbit, the first sentence states "Animal shelters are often looking for good homes for rabbits." The numerous photographs are very informative and make it perfectly clear that the responsibility for care rests with the child, not the parent. In the back of the bok are useful tips, a fact file, a glossary, an index, and additional recommended book resources. If you are looking for a rabbit primer, I think you'd find this one will meet your expectations!
