My favorite Romance

This was the first romance novel I ever read - my friend bought it because it had the trashiest cover. I never guessed it would become my favorite romance novel, and in fact, one of my favorite books! Kate Holden, having lost her fortune and home out East, travels with her sister and brother-in-law to find their fortune in the mining town of Cripple Creek. There she is reacquainted with an old family friend (and serious crush) Justin Talbot. After a while, even more tragedy befalls the family, and Kate finds herself needing a lot of money, quickly, to pay for her sister's health care. Kate, being noble as well as practical, decides to give up her virginity and respectability and becomes a prostitute to earn money fast to save her sister. She has to give up her dreams of a family, college, and a "normal" life in order to do this. The reasons I love this book are because, through it all she keeps her inquisitive mind, her intelligence, and above all her good spirits. She does not become a victim, as in many romances about "ruined" virgins. Kate only has one man, the handsome and rich Justin Talbot. Justin brings her into his life and, the way all good romance novels go, realizes he loves her. Kate never loses her "self" though all her difficulties, and stays a very strong woman. She is constantly quoting in Latin, making suggestions for Justin's mining business, and generally being an active player. Also, the sex scenes are wonderfully written - tastefully somewhere between chaste kisses and the pornographic extremes. I highly recommend this romance novel. Kate Holden is such a strong woman and is written as a real character, not just an archetype of a romance heroine.

great read!

I have just resently started reading in the romance field and I must say this is definatly one of the best I have read so far. The characters are so well written that you dont have any trouble putting yourself in their shoes. So all in all great book!

great reading

This is one of those books I've had for a while and every once in a while I take out and read again. It's definitely a keeper -- written very well.

Lots of fun!

Having visited The Old Homestead, the brothel which figures so prominently in the book (and I was visiting ONLY as a visitor--the building is now a museum!), I was vastly entertained by the author's use of the structure and Cripple Creek itself. Heaven knows The Old Homestead has enough features (such as the " viewing room") to encourage any author's imagination, but Ms. DeForest does a superb job.

i really enjoyed the historical accuracy

it's not all about sex! a strong female is nice to see in an "aching loins" novel. i like the imagery of early Colorado mining towns, very vivid and accurate
