An Outstanding Introduction to the Old Testament

Subtitled: "A Theological Introduction to the Old Testament," this book does not fail to educate, inspire, and to introduce one to the God of Israel. Christoph Barth, one of the famous Swiss theologian Karl Barth's sons, has provided us with a beautifully rich resource for better understanding the Old Testament thematically. This is a marvelous book, both for the beginner and for the seasoned veteran. Rooted in a love for the Scripture, and the God revealed in and through the Scripture, and a desire to exposit it theme by theme, Barth has left us in his debt. I first used this resource in seminary in Walter Bruggemann's Old Testament Theology class and have continued to use it regularly since and I graduated in 1993-fourteen years ago. I have found it that helpful. As one may see from the Table of Contents Barth's themes are centered on the living active God and what this God does. The activity of God is purposeful, peculiar, powerful, and providential according to Barth. The chapters are as follows: Introduction 1.) God created Heaven and Earth 2.) God chose the Fathers of Israel 3.) God brought Israel out of Egypt 4.) God led his people through the Wilderness 5.) God revealed himself at Sinai 6.) God granted Israel the Land of Canaan 7.) God raised up Kings in Israel 8.) God chose jerusalem 9.) God sent his Prophets Notice that God is the main active character of this book and in Barth's understanding of the Old Testament also. Like his father's Church Dogmatics, each section begins with a thesis statement that is explained throughout the rest of the chapter. It is clearly written (translated by noted Barth translator Geoffrey Bromiley) and immensely helpful. I keep it close to hand as a reliable guide to a theologically rich understanding of the Old Testament. I recommend it highly.
