The Secret Gospel of John, also known as the Apocrypha of John, is a text with secret teachings of Setian Gnosticism and dates from the second century. It describes appearances of Jesus Christ to the Apostle John where Gnostic knowledge (Gnosis) is passed on to him.
One of the Gospels found in Nag Hammadi, which reveals a Gnostic vision of Christianity. In the soul a continuous conflict reigns between voluntarism, ignorance and the soul's desire to get rid of voluntarism and its consequences and to return to its origin. Only a complete surrender and a totally new knowledge - Gnosis - can the soul reach its goal: reunification with the Spirit.
