How to Seek and Be Blessed by God-given Spiritual Gifts

The Lord has revealed that spiritual gifts "are given for the benefit of those who love me and keep all my commandments, and him that seeketh so to do." (D & C 46:9) This book actually lists seven reasons why spiritual gifts are given to mankind: (1) to benefit those who love God, (2) to prevent man from being deceived by false doctrine, (3) to bless the entire membership of God's church, (4) to cause man to walk uprightly before God, (5) to cause man to consider the end of his salvation, and (7) to characterize those who are true believers. "Gifts of the Spirit" was written "to show that spiritual gifts exist, to bear witness to their divine origin, to explain the nature of the various spiritual gifts, and to show how man can gain the influence of the Holy Ghost and the gifts of the spirit to enrich his own life." Part I, "The Quest," has two very meaningful chapters: "Seeking the Gifts of the Spirit" and "Recognizing the Guidence of the Spirit." They provide wise counsel on how spiritual gifts should be sought. Part II, "Gifts of Knowledge," defines four scripturally-enumerated spiritual gifts, providing numerous examples from LDS Church-history sources of how Latter-day Saints have received, perceived and utilized those gifts. Chapter 3: "A Testimony of the Divinity of Jesus Christ through His Personal Manifestation." Chapter 4: "A testimony of the Divinity of Jesus Christ through Belief in the Witness of Others." Chapter 5: "Godly Knowledge," and Chapter 6: "Godly Wisdom." Part III, "Gifts of Faith," is organized in five chapters: Chapter 7: "Faith," Chapter 8: "Faith to Heal Others," Chapter 9: "Faith to Be Healed," Chapter 10: "Miracles," and Chapter 11: "Helps and Governments" (preparation and guidance in Church callings). Part IV, "Gifts of Communication," includes Chapter 12: "Revelation," 13: "Prophecy," 14: "Speaking in Tongues," 15: "Interpretation of Tongues," and 16: "Six Gifts of Self-Expression": speaking, writing, translation, teaching, expounding the scriptures, and bearing testimony. Again, as in all the chapters, numerous examples of how these gifts have been received and utilized are given. Part V, "Gifts of Church Administration," has four chapters: 17: "Administration" (leadership and organizational abilities), 18: "Diversities of Operations" (knowledge of current happenings, and knowledge of whether activities and events are from God), and 19: "Discerning of Spirits." Part VI, "Gifts of Salvation and Exaltation," has four chapters: 20: "Repentance," 21: "Charity," 22: "Hope," and 23: "Eternal Life." "Gifts of the Spirit" is a sweet book which readers tend to internalize. Many have told how it has touched their hearts, healed sadnesses, and brought joy as they have received new gifts and Spirit-led experiences. First published in 1964, more than 100,000 copies have been sold, and it continues to enjoy substantial ongoing sales.
