ISBN 0688065678 - I've always been a great fan of the well-told tall tale and when it comes in the form of a childrens' book, it's hard to get it wrong. From The Christmas Blizzard to The Ghosts of Luckless Gulch to Gib Morgan, I've been a fan longer than I've been alive. Really. In 1859, Gib Morgan was seventeen years old and watching lots of people from his town rush off into the oil fields to make their fortune. Tired of his job, Gib decided to join them. Soon, he discovered that he was very good at his new job and was hired by many companies to drill wells in impossible places. One derrick he built was so tall that the top had to be hinged... so it could be folded back to allow the moon to pass. After an incredibly successful life as an oilman, Morgan returned home and settled down, spending his time telling stories of the oil fields - which everyone believed, of course. If there's an audience in the world that will appreciate the ridiculous, it's children. That makes them the perfect people for good old fashioned tall tales, and the taller the better. The text, by Ariane Dewey, is well-written and funny. Many of the stories are based on the real tales told by the real Gib Morgan, although some are - according to the author's note - attributed to the fictional characters of Kemp Morgan and Paul Bunyan. The illustrations (no separate illustrator is listed) are not great art, but they are funny and they add just a little extra whimsy to a very whimsical book. - AnnaLovesBooks
