In this fun tribute to friendship and sharing, a little boy named Pete shows a new friend what Halloween is all about. When Pete moves into a new house, he is startled to discover a ghost hidden in a box that has been stored in the attic. He is even more surprised to find that Ghost is just as afraid of him. Ghost explains that he's been in the box for one hundred years, singing a little tune about a skeleton. Pete's mother calls him to lunch, and he has to leave his new friend for a short time. When he returns, Ghost has climbed back into the box because he's comfortable there. To coax him out of his hiding place, Pete invites him to see his new bedroom. Ghost discovers he's just as comfortable in Pete's room because it is filled with unpacked boxes. While he peruses the boxes, he discovers one that doesn't have a label. Pete opens it to show ghost the Halloween costumes inside. With Pete dressed as a ghost and Ghost dressed as a parrot, the two friends set out in the evening. Pete tries to show Ghost how to trick-or-treat, but Ghost just can't seem to get the hang of it. He yells at people and insults them, which doesn't bode well for his loot bag. The two stick together despite Ghost's problem grasping the concept of trick-or-treating, and Pete shows him what friendship is all about. Although Ghost and Pete is an early reader book constructed for children in first through third grade, it is just as fun when read by an adult. Dodds presents Ghost's trick-or-treating issue in an amusing light, which is bound to have readers laughing out loud. The dialogue affords parents the opportunity to use a wide spectrum of expression. The storyline moves along at a good pace, without a lot of repetition. The reading level is appropriate for independent readers, and the charming illustrations are colorful and not in the least bit frightening. Ghost and Pete is an all around enjoyable book, well-thought out and carefully presented.
