A great mix of creativity and education!

Ruthie Marks has created a wonderfully creative and provocative alternative to an everyday "how-to" book. She provides enough basic information to create the design she features in the book, then adds thought-provoking extras so the reader can "take off" and create their own iterations of the pattern. I especially loved her explanations of geometric theories in relation to design patterns. They added such an interesting dimension to her crochet lessons - a true measure of creativity and forward thinking. Thanks, Ruthie. You did a great job. Your book is a winner!

Thinking Person's Crochet

This is not just a pattern book- although it does have patterns. It is an inspiring primer on concepts that will improve all your projects, as well as give you something to mull over while you stitch away. The author clims to be math phobe, but her explanations are clear and inspiring. It reminds me most of the Plummer's excellent book "Woolly Thoughts". I found this book to be a real step forward from crochet books that just reel out line by line instructions. It is inspiring, clearly written, and has plenty of food for thought. While all of the projects are not to my exact taste, each project is an excellent illustration for the concept being taught. I will probabaly make most of these, but better yet, I am inspired to strike out on my own with the ideas I learned from this book.

Combining math and crochet

Dragon Curves, Golden Ratio and Fibonacci Sequence all sound like you are in math class. But never fear, you are about to crochet them, not work on a geometry problem. I often take a pattern and add my own crochet ideas to it but Ruthie Marks has given me one more way to add to a pattern and it is so easy. Dragon Curves are done on those mesh squares you make from a chain one, skip one, double crochet in next chain patterns. Just double crochet (or triple crochet) on the post, then on the chain space and then up the next post to make this very fluffy and filling crochet stitch. I can't wait to try it. The Golden Ratio is something I have been doing my whole life and just didn't know what to call it. Use a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio, Ruthie's numbers are a bit more exacting, to create a color pattern and you have the Golden Ratio. While Ruthie explains it in much more detail and with more expertise, this is the basic idea of the Golden Ratio. The Fibonacci Sequence is a number scale; 4, 7, 11 and 15 for example. Again, Ms. Marks does a better job of telling you how to create this but this is the scaled down version. The book is written in language like someone is actually teaching you rather than with a technical feel. I could relate much better to her explains of how to create each stitch than in other crochet instruction books. It has a homey, down-to-earth feel and that makes me think it is something that I can learn. There are seven or eight patterns for each of these three stitches. Scarves, rugs, wall hangings and doormats will shown off your newly learn stitches. Different types of yarn or cords are also used so you can expand the materials you use. And the colors are alive and bright. There are plenty of color photos and graphics and each pattern has a skill level indicator. The end of each section has a page of challenges for you to stretch what you have learned. There are plenty of useful items in this book and three new stitches so grab a copy and get stitching!
