"They say that geese mate for life. I have to wonder what's going through their minds when they're flying. Are they thinking, 'My mate isn't flying in front of me long enough and how selfish is he and why can't he stay in formation for one minute?' I doubt it. They seem to stick together no matter what."

Real women, real life experiences

So much literature today is about extraordinary people doing extraordinary things. For example, there are no shortages of books about spies, forensic anthropologists and detectives, and lawyers. These books are exciting because readers can learn about something new and exciting. However, some of the best books are those about ordinary people doing ordinary things. Geese Mate for Life claims to be an e-mail diary between two real women, and it is exactly that. Thirty- and forty- something women, especially women who are trying to manage a career, a husband, and children will relate to the stories and themes within the e-mail correspondence. Some of the exchanges are serious and sentimental, but most are witty and entertaining. At first I was worried that I would have trouble following the letters and determining who was writing what, but fortunately the alternating bold formatting made this very simple. Also, I was initially overwhelmed by the first few pages, which contained a list of all the characters in the book and a description of who they were. I thought, "My goodness, I'm not going to remember all these details!" As it turns out, it was really only a handy reference if I was reading about a specific person and I needed a refresher on his or her relation to the other characters. This directory of characters should really come at the end of the book, but then you might read the whole book and not even realize it was there. The book touches briefly on some meaningful themes such as forgiveness, appreciation of others in your life, and the importance of friendships. But, for the most part, this book is really a very light read. Most of the e-mail messages are less than a page long, and most chapters are less than five pages, so it's a great book to read when you have to stop and restart reading often. I think the real value in reading this book is identifying with the characters and reading something and stopping to think, "I thought that that type of thing only happened to me!" There is much to be said for reading about those to whom we can relate.
