As children, Neil and Novella Fortun individually experienced the extremes of life. For a period of years, they each went through the trauma associated with living in a dysfunctional home. Neil's mother served time in prison, as did Novella's dad. At age fourteen, Neil was adopted by Chris and Lorene Fortun and became part of a loving family. Novella had the continuity of her mother's love and care while her dad was in prison. During that time, they lived at the Fortuns' boardinghouse, and she enjoyed the same loving and caring environment that Neil did.Over time, Neil and Novella developed a close friendship as they lived and worked on the farm.
