Music from composers in original "Gather" plus music from Hispanic & African-American churches and songs from world church includes psalm section to cover entire church year This description may be from another edition of this product.
If you lead worship in a progressive church which sometimes uses contemporary music you will not want to be without this book. Unlike many contemporary music resources, this one contains a diverse selection of music, and (in my opinion)virtually no shallow, syrupy theology. There are 659 songs and hymns. It is published by GIA which (unless I am mistaken)publishes mostly Catholic resources, however as a member of a mainline Protestant denomination I have not found this to be an issue theologically. Even the service music section, which is decidedly Catholic, has elements such as Alleluias, communion music, Kyries, Glorias, and Amens that are appropriate for worshippers of many backgrounds. The editors of Gather, Second Edition have included such contemporary composers as David Haas, Andre Crouch, Marty Hougen, Bernadette Farrell, John Foley, Dan Schutte, Bob Dufford, Rory Cooney, Michael Joncas, Pete Seeger, Jacques Berthier, Suzanne Toolen, Christopher Walker, Brian Wren, Ruth Duck, John L. Bell and Fran Minkoff who are by no means all Roman Catholic. Included, as well, are songs from various African traditions, the Taize Community, Native American traditions, the Iona Community, African-American spirituals, the Shaker tradition and music from countries like Mexico, France, England, Ireland, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands, to name a few. Many of the songs and hymns are scripture-based. I have the guitar accompaniment edition, which is two spiral bound books. Most of the songs have the melody only, with guitar chords. There is an edition for keyboard that has more complete harmonization. Indexes include Scriptural, Liturgical year, Thematic/topical, Composers/Authors, Metrical and First Lines/Common titles. There is something here for any worshiping congregation that respects the diversity of God's gifts, reflected in the beauty of the world's cultures. As a nice bonus, the print is large enough for a middle-aged person like myself to read.
