Book Overview

Considering two kinds of plants as indispensable elements of a garden - groundcovers and vines, this book teaches readers that together they bring density, diversity and depth to a garden. It calls attention to groundcovers for sunny places and shady ones, herbaceous perennials and woody plants.

Gardening, Practical and Poetic

Philosopher and dirt-gardener Lacy says this was to be two chapters in a larger book, but these two plant families ran away with him. He urges growing plants on the upper and lowest planes as well as the usual 1 - 5-foot ones. In his elegant prose he tells benefits and drawbacks of various ones, including a chapter "Beautiful Thugs" of things that run wild that entice him, nevertheless. Sumptious photos by frequent book-writing partner Carolyn Woodyard.
