Great book! There were apparently three or four books before this that I didn't read, didn't know about (involving the heroine's brothers), but I didn't need to read them to know what's going on in this one. Stands alone beautifully. Gritty, suspenseful, all those things I like. The main characters are well-written. I really liked them and cared about what happened to them, wanted to see them get past their painful histories to end up together. The dialogue is terrific between the two, no trite phrases. There were plenty of bad guys to suspect, and I didn't know who the real bad guy was till the very end. I highly recommend this book, my first one by Amanda Stevens.
A page turner

The book started with a bang and kept moving, with lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys mysteries that are heavy on suspense.

Fiona Gallagher, a star prosecutor in the Chicago Homicide/ Sex Crimes Unit, is sent to make sure the police follow procedure when a young girl is found dead outside a disreputable night club. When she arrives on the scene Detective Ray Doggett, who has been unable to identify the young woman, resorts to calling an unidentified number found in the victim's purse and Fiona's cell phone rings. Fiona is horrified to discover that the victim is the daughter of her close friend and thus begins her involvement in this well plotted police story. The relationship between Fiona and Ray though never in doubt is nicely drawn, but its the investigation that really keeps you guessing. I enjoyed this one!
