The cornerstone text in the popular series Medical Guides to Complementary and Alternative Medicine, edited by Dr Micozzi, Fundamentals of Complementary and Alternative Medicine returns fully updated and expanded in its second edition. The unique approach in this book provides the historical background of alternative healing systems, in addition to the most up-to-date information on scientific research, plus basic clinical applications. Rather than attempting to address every conceivable alternative therapy, this text instead explores those thatare best supported by clinical trials and hard evidence, making it a particularly valuable reference within traditional medical settings. Intended as an introduction to the topic of alternative medicine, Dr Micozzis book has become the standard among medical and health care professionals who wish to learn about incorporating these procedures into an allopathic practice.Evidence-based approach focuses on treatments most supported by clinical trials, providing proof in a field often regarded with scepticism.Broad perspective traces the therapy from its origin throughout its development, up to the latest research-based findings. 2-color design highlights diagrams, boxes, heading, and special features.Experts contributors, including several well-known authors of other published works, lend credibility and expertise to the text. Well-referenced chapters and suggested readings reinforce the evidence-based approach.More information than ever on non-western alternative medicine systems, including Native American Healing, Native American Medicinal Plants, Sufi Healing/Islamic Medicine, and African Healing Traditions.Expanded information on Chinese medicine, with an additional section on Tibetan medicine. New appendix, Twenty Most Commonly Used Medicinal PlantsMore effective organisation for a logical balance of information within each section.
Excellent overall reference for the methods discussed.

I used this book as a reference for writing a study guide for a fully-accredited distance education master's level program. This text served as an excellent overall reference for the alternative methods discussed. In addition, the author provides information on the cultural evolution of the therapy where appropriate and also notes where both tradional western medicine and the alternative therapy intersect for the benefit of the patient. One of the most interesting parts of the text has to do with a discussion of why "alternative medicine" is considered alternative and why alternative medicine is gaining in momentum and popularity at the present time. While the text does a good job of individually discussing the various methods, their common philosophical roots are what distinguish each from the western medical approach. This practical "philosophy" that makes sense is also why there has been such widespread growth and acceptance.
Surprisingly informative

Not the usual & quot;Pope's Guide to Heathen Religions, & quot; but a serious examination of the history, philosophy and techniques of the major health care traditions. I liked that each chapter, discussing a particular field, was written by a member of that profession. The book leans toward the academic, but I learned a lot. The best book I have read on this subject.
