Fully Human Fully Divine

Over many years I have read probably more than a few hundred Christain books. This is the most helpful, beautifully written, mind and heart opening book I can ever recall reading. I would give this book ten stars and anyone whether Christain or not would appreciate the powerful exposure of human nature! This was and is still a life changing book for me. I am still referring to this book and carry it with me when I travel. Thank you Michael Casey.

Exceptional book on the Incarnation

Don't let "Christology" in the title mislead you into thinking this is a purely scholarly work. This is, rather, an exceptional book on what the Incarnation means for you and I, here and now. It has an inspired method of alternating chapters: one chapter is entitled "Jesus the Learner," and is a meditation on how Jesus learned and grew while in the flesh, the next chapter is entitled "An Open Heart," and is about how we must follow in his footsteps, learn and grow through life. It is a deceptively dense book. Although it could be easily read in a week, the author suggests the reader take a year to read it. This is because each paragraph could be used as meditation material, it is that good. It can be exceptionally comforting and consoling on the one hand, on the other it can make you squirm in your chair as it requires honesty in facing the truths of just how petty and even evil we can sometimes be. Yet through it all, Christ is there, teaching, guiding, giving his life to us as savior. I think what I like best about the book, however, is the ordinary Trappist realism behind the spirituality. For example, "the control of our sexual urges over time is often simply the natural slowing of this impulse in us as we age rather than some extraordinary spiritual self-conquest." (That's a paraphrase). There are statements like that peppered throughout the book that will make you laugh, and keep you down to earth, smiling and very, very glad to be human, because our God became human for us. I suspect this book will be a source of growth for many long before many of the classics will be.

Fully Human, Fully Divine

I highly recommend this entire book of essays on the impact of Jesus Christ on day to day living. The language is clear and precise and understandable. It can become a lifetime companion for guidance.

a spiritual gift

This book is incredible! I have never encountered a book that both engaged my spiritual development and growth as I read it, and was academically this solid. Casey is an exceptional writer and I have hung on nearly every word. This is where the rubber of spirituality meets the road of human existence.

Classical Michael Casey

I was concerned when I saw the word "Christology" in the title of this book that it would focus on the theological, rather than having Michael Casey's usual pragmatic spirituality. There was no need for concern, this book is consistent with Casey's usual style. Being a monk seems to have sharpened his understanding of the human condition. The book chapters are: 1. Divine humanity 2. The recalcitrant body 3. Jesus baptized in the Jordan 4. Ourselves and others 5. Jesus tempted 6. Contrary imaginations 7. Jesus exorcises 8. Detoxification 9. Jesus the sower 10. Trust in providence 11. Jesus stills a storm 12. A quiet mind 13. Jesus the learner 14. An open heart 15. Jesus moves around 16. Ambiguity 17. Jesus transfigured 18. Meta-experience 19. Jesus the prophet 20. Confession 21. Gethsemane 22. Crisis 23. Desolation 24. Nakedness 25. Eternity From the back cover: "In eloquent prose, Michael Casey offers a Marcan-based gospel exploration of the humanity and divinity of Jesus. Chapters on the dynamics of Jesus life on earth as portrayed in Mark alternate with chapters that turn our attention back to our own human condition. Thus, we grow in an understanding of our own humanity as the means by which we participate in the precious gift of divine life in and through Christ." It is definitely worth reading.
