Book Overview

The world of colors is one of the first that children come to know. But no introduction is quite like Full Color, here reissued from Creative Editions' 2008 original in a smaller format suited for smaller hands. The strange, wonderful creatures of artist Etienne Delessert present all the colors of the rainbow, identify the primary colors, and illustrate how three colors can make countless others. Wiggly-eyed creatures will teach children about primary, secondary and tertiary colors!

Rainbows are a mixture of seven colors we sometimes see after a storm. Seven fun wiggly-eyed characters stand side by side strutting their stuff and showing us what a rainbow looks like. In the rainbow we have red, orange (like flames), yellow (like the sun), green (like grass), blue (like water), indigo (like dye) and violet (like a tulip). In this book wiggly-eyed creatures show us that there are three primary colors and by "mixing them [it] creates all of nature's colors." When a creature interacts with another one, the conjoined part(s) show the other color that is made. When blue and yellow shake hands we have green. When red gives blue a little kick to the tush, it becomes purple. When the red and yellow ball come together we see orange. When all the critters, red blue, and yellow join together we see brown. White "reflects all colors," while black "absorbs all colors." This delightful book is a wonderful way to introduce primary and secondary colors to the preschool or older child. There is one example of how a tertiary color is made. The creatures are set against a white reflective background, making them stand out for easier comprehension. This would be a fun circle time or homeschool book. Get out the markers, watercolors and start to paint! These wiggly-eyed critters certainly make this concept easy to understand, don't they?
