Other tour guides TAKE NOTE!

Everything you ever wanted to know about Japan. Just ask, the answer is here. Ms. Reiber, with Ms. Spencer, have given me the confidence to plan my trip without going through a tour guide. But if I wanted to, that info is covered as well. Not just hotel and dining recommendations, but maps, history, travel within Japan, passport and visa info, currency conversion rates, useful Japanese phrases, phone and internet procedures, Japanese characters used for some signs (like businesses and subway stops); even the proper way to hold chopsticks and slurp soup with noodles are included in this book! I already feel as though I can navigate the streets better (which, the book informs, is challenging because most of the streets DON'T HAVE STREET SIGNS) because of the detailed maps supplied. Huge as this tome is, it's thorough, and I don't think I'll be leaving home without it!

Very good guide book!

This is a great guide book. I used it on my very first trip to Japan and it really helped me experience a lot of things that I would have never been able to find or know about on my own. I traveled with a friend that is Japanese and there were things in this book that they didn't even know about. The maps of the cities are also accurate, which is a big help. My other travel partner had another book from a different publisher and it only listed pictures and locations about things to do. It didn't have maps or directions. I think that is what puts this product ahead of the others.

Everything for Japan Travel

Frommer's Japan is amazingly detailed and very current. It has everything you need to travel in Japan whether you are a student or a business person. I appreciate the details, but the hotel details are almost too much. Good itineraries, good sites-to-see advice, and good sense of essentials!

Informative and Reliable

I've been living in Japan for six months now, using this book to plan a number of trips to various places. So far, it hasn't let me down once; recommended eateries and accommodation have been excellent, and the guides to attractions have been accurate and helpful. It is targeted at people who speak no Japanese, and who are interested in seeing the tourist sights. If you're interested in hiking around the bits of Japan that no tourists visit, you'd be better off with a different book. However, I don't see that as a flaw of this book. It does what it sets out to do extremely well.

Indespensible for a first time traveler to Japan.

I found this book extremely useful in planning my trip to Japan, especially when selecting destinations outside of the obvious Tokyo and Kyoto. In particular this book convinced me to stay over in Miyajima after going to Hiroshima, and to spend a night at a Buddhist temple in Koyasan. These were unforgettable experiences. While this guide does not provide adequate navigational information (I used Lonely Planet and Japan Solo) it is more valuable for itinerary planning. I also found the hotel and restaurant recommendations reliable and interesting.
