Book Overview

Luis Bunuel called P ret "the quintessential surrealist poet." Benjamin Peret is a poet like no other. One of the original group of Surrealists, he seceded from Dada in 1924 and remained faithful to Surrealist principles until his death in 1959. His irreverence and incandescent imagination remain fresh and funny, and they are perfectly captured in this inspired, idomatic translation.

"When the burning coals run away like frightened lions at the bottom of the mine"

If that first line startles & delights you, then waste no time in getting a copy of this dazzling collection. Peret is the most uncompromisingly free of the Surrealists, refusing to be bound by traditional form or logic. Thus his poetry is constantly fresh, making the reader look anew at the world & at the ordinary words we use without ever thinking about them, infusing them with mystery & wonder once more. Yet the more you read, the more sense it makes -- not traditional sense, but a deeper sense that's beyond the everyday. It disorients you so much that you've got to find your own footing, not relying what's been drilled into you by others since childhood. The heart of Surrealism is finding the marvelous everywhere, and this slim volume is rich with it -- highly & dizzyingly recommended!
