Life for me has often been a long and arduous journey. In my life I have experienced many dramatic changes: I was born in Beijing fourteen months after the Communist Party took over power in 1949; because of the Cultural Revolution, my education stopped in eighth grade and I was unwillingly sent to Inner Mongolia as a farm laborer; then I willingly crossed the Pacific Ocean to become a Canadian citizen. In China, my generation was named 'the generation sharing the same age as the People's Republic of China'. Unfortunately, our generation suffered four major 'disasters'. Firstly, we suffered the 'Three-Year Famine'- from 1960 to 1962, when our bodies should have been growing; secondly, our education was suspended because of the 'Cultural Revolution'- from 1966 to 1976, when we were thirsty for knowledge; thirdly, when our generation was of age to start a family, the-'One-Child'-Policy was thrust upon us; fourthly in the 1990s, we were forced to 'retire'- in truth this was due to a high rate of unemployment which came when we were about 50 years of age because of the country's economic reform. This book not only describes my own life, it also shines a light on the social and political events that went through in the Chinese society from 1950 to 1990.
