I am an avid reader. I particularly enjoy historical fiction and specifically multi-generational family saga series. Nicolaysen's "New York" series of 5 is highly recommended. In each book, the characters are diverse and well developed, as are the plot lines. The historical context, particularly developing NYC is well considered and presented. A difficult series to find since is out-of-print, but well worth the treasure hunt. "From Distant Shores" covers the time period 1613-1667. The following is from the mass market pb cover: "This vibrant, colorful novel follows the adventures of one family, the de Kuypers, who came from distant shores to settle in a breathtaking forest eden: Pieter, explorer, builder, whaler, who knew from his first adventure-lost then rescued by friendly natives-that his destiny lay on the island; Christina, brave because she had to be, forced to bear arms as well as children, and determined to carve a place for herself in the fight for survival; and Jacob Adam, the bastard son, who ushered in a ruthless new breed of empire builders on the long island." "The story of the first Dutch immigrants-lovers and dreamers, scoundrels and rogues, with the courage to bring their dreams to the shores of the New World."
