A quite comprehensive introduction to 'Victorian Literature'

There are essays here on Dickens,Thackery and Trollope, Tennyson, Browning, 'Middlemarch' 'Wuthering Heights' Mathew Arnold , George Meredith, G.M. Hopkins, Hardy. There are also survey essays on the social and economic background, and on the Literature of the period as a whole. There are also essays on the 'The Early Victorian Social Novel' 'The Voice of Prophecy in Carlyle and Ruskin 'Pre-Raphaelite Poetry' 'The Victorian Reading Public'' Aspects of Victorian Architecture'. This volume thus provides a good overall introduction to the Literature of the period. I however did not enjoy it as much as I have other volumes in the series although this may have more to do with me than with the essays themselves.
