Every Police Academy should have this book as part of their standard teaching program for those entering the Force. Buy it, read it, understand it, then teach others how and to accept those different to themselves.
A Compelling Biography of Triumph Over Adversity
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 14 years ago
This is a compelling story that had to be told. The ignorance and intolerance that is present in law enforcement today is shameful. Adam's story goes far beyond the insiduious abuse that is so painfully prevelent in the public service sector (and unfortunately through out all veins of society). Adam talks about standing up to the very people he once held in such high regard and refusing to be a "door mat" for their sick and disturbing actions. Most importantly, Adam's story reveals a deep spirituality that was gained from overcoming this seemingly insurmountable obstical once again demonstrating the resilient nature of the human spirit. Napoleon Hill said that "every adversity carries with it the seed of an equivolent or greater benefit" and Adam has found that greater benefit. It is a story of hope and encouragement for young gay individuals everywhere. Bravo!!!
A Story That Must Be Told
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 14 years ago
Adam Bereki wanted the same thing I did at the age of 15 when he entered law enforcement. He dreamed of a police career and worked hard to earn his place at the Huntington Beach, CA. Police Department. But when his co-workers began to suspect he was gay, Adam's dream began to be crushed. Ultimately, he was forced out by the same kind of homophobia that exists throughout most of the law enforcement profession. Despite having his dream taken away, Adam has written this book with the hope of creating awareness and educating others about the devastation homophobia can cause. There are many highly successful and professional police officers working in communities through this country just like Adam. They suffer in silence. The story Adam tells will anger you and, as a tax payer, it should. It will also fill your heart with hope as you read how Adam has let go of his anger and taken a position on higher ground. His introspection and self-discovery process is inspirational. What a shame for law enforcement to loose this kind of talent. This is a book every police chief and sheriff should read. It's not a matter of when you will hire a gay police officer, it's a matter of when the officer who already works for you will find the courage to come out. What have you done to create a safe and inclusive work place? Or will you loose an officer like Adam because of the homophobia within your own ranks.
Friendly Fire: The Illusion of Justice

It is hard to put this book down. Friendly Fire: The Illusion of Justice is very descriptive to the point that it makes the reader pause and look back at their own words/actions towards others in the workplace. Very well done..
