Book Overview

Forced by bankruptcy and scandal into exile in France, Lord Waverly expects never to return to his homeland until, staggering home from a gaming hell in the wee hours of the morning, he encounters a young novice escaping from a convent. When she asks him to escort her to England, promising that her English grandfather will reward him handsomely for her safe conveyance, Waverly reluctantly agrees. Alas, Waverly soon realizes the enormity of his task...

Great fun!

FRENCH LEAVE is the best Sheri Cobb South novel yet -- and that's saying something! This book is fun from start to finish. The opening chapters reminded me of Georgette Heyer's classic THESE OLD SHADES (dissipated English nobleman picks up a French gamine on a dark Paris street) -- on purpose, I suspect. Because just as I settled down to enjoy what I hoped would be a long, well-done visit with a favorite pair of characters -- inhabiting a new book, how delightful! -- the author slyly veered off in an entirely new, different direction, leaving no doubt that these characters are very much her own creation. FRENCH LEAVE is original, refreshing, and complex. Sheri Cobb South deftly creates an entertaining romp with a touch of melancholy at its heart. The funniest scenes are made more funny by the fact that the characters are in deadly earnest. What fun the author must have had, plotting this one. I picture her scribbling frantically at dead of night, laughing to herself and muttering, "Okay, wait. How about -- no! No! What if --" I don't want to give anything away. Suffice it to say, the plot twists pile on toward the end of the book, thick and fast and hugely entertaining. We are free to laugh at the characters' frantic antics because by the time things get thoroughly muddled, we trust the author and feel sure that everything will come out right in the end. And it does, to the reader's deep satisfaction.A well-crafted tale, charmingly told. Highly recommended.

What a way to spend an evening..

Sheri Cobb South writes with a delightful flow of words, a smooth and fast moving plot, and marvelous characters. For a reader such as I, who doesn't like or read any historical books let alone Regency, I was hooked from the first paragragh of Weaver Takes a Wife. I couldn't wait to read more and French Leave did not diappoint. This is a marvelous trip as we are transported to olde England to join people so real we feel we know them. Following characters introduced in preious novels make the journey all the more fun. South's books are like a hot cup of chocolate on a cold night--warm and satisfying. We are well entertained by a master of Regency writing,a true artist in this genre. Encore, encore, Sheri Cobb South!

A Sparkling Gem

This is a perfect traditional regency. From the beautiful cover to the luxurious layout, to the perfect, but not over-done, Regency language, everything in this book transports the reader into an age of light-hearted elegance. The author pays homage to Heyer without copying her, and writes with a facility that few current regency authors can command.I liked it a lot better than "The Weaver Takes a Wife", the earlier book in the series and look forward to reading the rest of her works!

Delightful!

A naive ingenue heroine, a rake in need of reform, and a marriage of inconvenience make this a very fitting end to the trilogy that began with THE WEAVER TAKES A WIFE. This story picks up four years after TWTAW, and shows us what happens to the wicked Lord Waverly after that book ends. In the meantime, the weaver and his lady wife are having problems of their own, as the bloom is off their now four-year-old marriage. A wonderful epilogue brings the story full circle, leaving the reader with a big smile and, perhaps, a twinge of sadness at saying goodbye to these familiar and well-loved characters.
