'The Modern Novel, 1938-1959' deals with the emergence of urban social realism (Gabrielle Roy, Roger Lemelin), its roots in the writings of Ringuet and Germaine Gu vremont, and the existentialism of Andr Langevin. 'The Sixties' treats the effects of the Quiet Revolution on the novel, and discusses major works by Yves Th riault, Hubert Aquin, G rard Bessette, Marie-Claire Blais, Roch Carrier, R jean Ducharme, Jacques Ferron, Jacques Godbout and Claire Martin among others. Concluding with a brief discussion of translation, and bibliographies of novels discussed and select criticism, this is an illuminating and readable introduction to a rich body of literature.
