He tracked his course with the aid of stars and planets. In preparing this first volume of his "Fremont's Greatest Western Exploration" series, John Stewart followed Fremont's course using modern highway and aviation maps. In doing so, Stewart went beyond what library bound researchers and historians could offer because of his own considerable expertise in using concepts of navigation to track Fremont's path in detail.
