Franklin knows he's not allowed another pet, but when he finds a lone duckling he can't resist bringing his new friend home. When the duckling turns his bedroom into a regular aquatic habitat, Franklin must ask himself: does he really want another pet after all? This Level 2 first reader contains longer stories, varied sentences, increased vocabulary, more difficult visual clues and some repetition.
That's the question on the mind of Franklin's Mom when Franklin decides to care for a little duckling that followed him home from the pond. You see, Franklin has his pet goldfish, Goldie, but he wants another pet. His parents, however, have said "no." One day, when Franklin and Bear are playing at the pond, they come upon a duckling that appears to be separated from its parents. Franklin wants to take it home, but Bear reminds him that his parents said he couldn't have another pet. Franklin disappointedly agrees, but the duckling follows him home. Franklin decides that it'll be his secret pet. But taking care of a "secret pet" is more work than Franklin thought it would be. A fun and funny story from this series, based loosely on one of the television stories. There's a lot of amusing moments in this one and a funny twist ending. The only thing I didn't like was the inclusion of Franklin's sister Harriet in this story -- I like her character, but Harriet was not born when this story took place in the television series, and I don't like how they keep trying to shoehorn her into earlier stories.
