Beginning readers

As a special services director at a small Catholic school, I am always looking for books that give students success in reading. This series has been a favorite for myself and the teachers on staff. Works really well both at school and home.

This "We Both Read" tale about Frank and Mikey is a lively book the emergent reader can actually "re

Frank and Mikey were two unlikely best friends. Frank was a frog and Mikey was a mouse, but they got along very well and liked to play together. They enjoyed swinging, but Mikey was a bit timid while on the other hand Frank "wanted to swing up as high as . . . an airplane." After they went swinging, they were sitting near the grass thinking when all of a sudden something big and red came down from the sky, flew past them and landed in the . . . "tall grass." Frank had a big imagination and thought it would be a "space man," but it turned out to be a balloon. Swinging high and just thinking about space men scared Mikey. Frank untangled the string around the balloon that had "two square eyes, a rectangular nose, and a smiling mouth." When he did that he went . . . "up." Frank went higher into the sky and when he looked down he could see Mikey, "his very best . . . friend." Mikey wanted him to come back, but Frank wanted to fly around and see the Earth from above. Mikey said that "frogs should be down here. You should . . . come down!" Perhaps he should have, but Frank was an adventurous frog and he wanted to see a few more things before he came down to Earth! This is a "We Both Read" book in which the parent or care giver reads the more complicated text on the left-hand page and the child reads the visually clued and easily read word or words on the right. There are a few samples in the two paragraphs above. The word or words after the ellipses are those that the child would read. The story is delightful and the art work was colorful and bright. This combination reader is a unique and fun way to share the joy of reading with your child. The emergent reader will feel confident and their fluency will increase with a successful reading experience. Before you know it, they'll be reading both sides in this book!
