What a delight - for a child, for me

What a delight to read through this book and imagine the ways I will do the play activities in it with one or more of the children in my extended family. We can read together, cut out the characters of Francis and his friends and of Clare and set them up like paper dolls complete with clothes of their early lives and change to their Franciscan and Poor Clare habits.Flowers and fabrics and more take on voices to tell the narrative of the life of St. Francis of Assisi. Connect the dots and mazes and word searches and other activities help the narrative along. What a fine way to hand on the life of Francis to our children. The drawings are delightful. Coloring suggestions for the San Damiano crucifix will give a child a deep sense of beauty. Writing a poem in the spirit of Francis the Troubador and dressing Francis as a Knight will delight the child who gets to do these things.Perchance, there may be some vocation awareness as Francis and his friends and Clare change their clothes and their lives. And perhaps, a question from a child with a mind sensitive to these changes.(...)So this story / activity book comes along with a wonderful way to tell all the stories - the Christmas crib at Greccio, the wolf of Gubbio, meeting the sultan (and there's lessons here for how to dialogue with our Muslim sisters and brothers throughout the world these days), the prayerful solitude, the crowning glory of the Canticle of the Sun.I found delight in reading through it and I look forward to spending time with this book and the children in my life.A wonderful gift for a child's birthday or First Communion or for Christmas, this book is also a wonderful gift for a grandparent or a great aunt like myself to have for entertaining a child on a visit.
