Very well written

As a lot of people can say, I am a direct decendent of Richard and Penelope Stout. After tracing back to them, I was thrilled to read this book. She was an amazing woman, I'm sure those of us who can actually trace back to her and not just say we are decended, can be very proud of this woman. Would love to read more about her.

Four Women In A Violent Time

Four Women In A Violent Time by Deborah Crawford, is the stories of four women in new settled North America, and connecting their stories. The author includes some historical background and side notes (little historical tidbits) which are great for history lovers but, boring for the rest of us. I found this book slightly boring at parts, but still got what I hoped out of it. Which was the fight for what they believed in, and the fact of being a woman, not stop them. This is a common theme, standing up and fighting for what you believe in. Just like in Inherit the Wind, the main character, Cates, stood up and fought for his belief of teaching evolution. I recommend it to history lovers and adults. Although it classified for young adults, I doubt it would keep many young adults interested. Although it had its dullness (history side notes), it was very interesting and captivating at action parts. For example, when the Indians attack, or when the Church threatens them and throws them in jail you couldn't stop reading. Overall it was a pretty good book, and very informative. I t did a good job showing how women helped America, and about the places, and their old names, and what they would turn out to be.

Four Women in a Violent Time

This is a very informative and riveting book. About 10 years ago I was given a copy of exerpts from this book because I am a decendant of Penelope Stout one of the Four women. As a newlywed Penelope embarked on the journey to America. Upon arrival, she found herself slashed across her middle so her intestines were hanging out, her shoulder hacked up, and she had been scalped by Indians. Imagine her horror after surviving for a week alone in a hollowed out tree to see two Indians coming. Obviously she survived, but you'll have to read the rest yourself to see how she was able to live to be 110 years old and bear 10 children.(this is my quick version this is not an exerpt, as you can see I am certainly not a writer) I had heard her fascinating story as a child, and reading those exerpts just wasn't enough for me. I set immediately to find the book for myself. After several years I was able to obtain a copy. I am now thrilled with the opportunity to buy more copies to pass along to my children so this part of our family's history can be preserved.

A surprisingly informative book in narrative for children

I am a descendant of one of the women in this book (Penelope Stout). The book is apparently supposed to be a children's book, but I found it remarkably informative and interesting. The author takes the stories of four women and brings them together with some historical background to present a fun to read narrative. Along the way are many unobtrusive but (to me) immensely interesting side notes (including origins of place names and historical tidbits).
