FOUR LITTLE PROBLEMS by Carrie Weaver May 21, 2006 Rating **** (4 stars) In the prologue of FOUR LITTLE PROBLEMS, Patrick Stevens tells parent Emily Patterson during a parent/teacher conference that his student, her oldest son Jason, needs "a reality check", thus starting a rather shaky relationship between Patrick and Emily, a relationship that gets off the ground two years later. Emily has replaced Tiffany, who had died from a surprise heart attack, as PTO leader, and because of it she's now working closely with Patrick, trying to locate PTO funds that have mysteriously disappeared. Emily has had no experience in this area, but she knows how important the PTO is in regards to funding school activities, thus affecting her four sons. It's not that she's got nothing else to do - raising four sons on her own is a 24/7 job but she's determined to give them all the opportunities she can give them, despite being a single mom. Patrick's first impression of Emily was not a good one, but as he works closely with her to find the missing funds, he becomes attracted to this vivacious curvaceous "in your face" woman. She doesn't hold back and you know where you stand with her. Patrick also becomes acquainted with her family, and discovers he likes Emily's two youngest sons, Mark and Ryan, but has a harder time with the quiet and studious Jeremy. He has the most problems with Jason, who continues to exhibit behavior that can be described as almost out of control. Patrick knows that if he's going to pursue a relationship with Emily, he needs to accept all four of her sons, but Jason stands in the way. Being the oldest son, Jason is very overprotective of his mother, and both he and Patrick clearly are not comfortable with each other. The reader will enjoy watching the romance blossom between Patrick and Emily, an almost comedic type of interplay due to Emily's very aggressive personality. She's not what one would call a beauty, is tall and slightly overweight, but Emily fascinates Patrick. The problems Jason creates, however, make for an interesting third party, almost coming between the two lovers because if Emily were going to pick sides, she would most often choose Jason's. The last few chapters bring this novel to a surprise climax, due to the compulsive actions of Jason and causing Patrick's inner fear and anger to come to the forefront. Throughout the novel, Patrick is dealing with a lot of heavy baggage, an accident that caused a big change in Patrick's family years ago, creating a huge guilt that he can't seem to shake. One may almost start to hate Patrick for his behavior toward Jason at the end of the novel, and one will not be surprised to find that Emily sides with her son. FOUR LITTLE PROBLEMS was a very enjoyable romance. One will love the four boys and will notice how their differences add to the bulk of the novel. The romance between Patrick and Emily was done realistically and was believable, despite their differences (as they say,
