Left with wealth, two daughters, and a passion for freedom after her husband's death, Lady Jane Averham wants only love--and not marriage--from the handsome Archibald MacGown. This description may be from another edition of this product.
Picked this up at a garage sale. The style is a bit dated, but the plot is entertaining and the characters delightful. The heroine, Lady Jane, is a young English widow with two daughters, 13 and 17. Financially comfortable, she is enjoying the social whirl and lightweight political intrigues of life in Vienna during the negotiations following the Napoleonic Wars. Lovely, charming and intelligent, she is popular with the ton, but careful not to encourage any serious courtship that might trap her into another marriage. At the same time, she is introducing her eldest daughter to the social scene, keeping one eye on her energetic and creative younger daughter, and chaperoning two other young ladies who are living with her for the Season. To her surprise, Jane is swept off her feet by Andrew, a man a few years younger than she, even as she struggles to maintain her independence. The stories of the four younger women deftly weave through the main plot. I have no idea whether Ms Westhaven's portrayal of this era is accurate, but it makes for an entertaining book. Expect some surprises and chuckles along the way. No explicit sex.
