Although this fascinating work is classified as "archaeology", the first half deals mostly with discoveries in paleontology and paleoanthropology - I view these as added bonuses. The authors present brief summaries of explorations and discoveries in the above fields by various individuals who lived mainly in the 19th and 20th centuries. The evolution of excavation techniques over this period is emphasized and makes for fascinating reading. The writing style is clear, authoritative, friendly and accessible. Some of the recounted adventures are indeed absolutely gripping, e.g., the chapters entitled `Cities from the Dust' and `Bible Quests', while other chapters are presented in a less engaging and even almost tedious style, e.g., `The Ancient Maya' and `Mysteries of the Incas'. However, all chapters are able to convey the excitement of discovery and the dedication of these bold adventurers. Those who are well-read in these subjects may be familiar with much of what is presented here; however, there will likely be some surprises. Consequently, this book can be enjoyed by anyone - general readers and archaeology buffs alike.
