I am coming to somewhat believe that the older books are quite a bit of the time better. It starts out with Carey McLendon finding out his father has died in Scotland. Then six weeks later, on his way back to London, he came upon what seemed to be a carriage accident. He saw Francesca lying in the sand next to the fallen coach, an exquisite beauty...quite dead, or at least he thought she was dead. The mystery starts there and just continues to progress and build. Keeps you riveted to your seat. Toward the end, I had to stay up until 2 AM to finish it. An excellent read.
