a flat-out masterpiece

Back in print at last, The Forests of the Night may well be the best novel ever written about the greater American southwest. It has long enjoyed a cult status among writers for its clean biting prose and deep understanding of life, human and non-human, in the lawless backcountry of the Sierra Madre, where the author spent many years on horseback buying cattle and prospecting for gold.
